Under the directive of the Honorable Chief Justice and head of the supreme court, 7,521 prisoners were released or granted sentence reductions.
Based on the instructions of the High Authority of the Supreme Court of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, and following inspections and monitoring carried out by an assigned delegation across the country’s prisons, 3,204 eligible prisoners were granted amnesty, while 4,317 others who were considered eligible for sentence reduction, received reductions in their prison terms.
It is noteworthy that the inspection delegation formed under the directive of the Supreme Court dated 7/3/1447 AH—was led by the head of each provincial appellate court or the head of the Criminal Division. Its members included judges from the relevant courts (whether city or primary courts), as well as representatives from the provincial police command, governor’s office, and intelligence department.
The delegation had been instructed to conduct comprehensive assessments of all prisons across the country in accordance with its specified procedures and submit its report to the Supreme Court.
